“I FEEL honored to be part of your pack,” Bastien said. “Truly, I do.”
Bruce smiled and squeezed Bastien’s knee under the table. “I’m glad you’re here too.”
“Oh jeez,” Auggie said. “If we didn’t have a serial killer on our hands, I’d tell you two to get a room.”
“So what we do at these boys’ luncheons?” Bastien asked.
“Well… let’s see,” Auggie said. “We eat.”
“And brainstorm,” Bruce added quickly, making up for Auggie’s lack of diplomacy.
“How exciting,” Bastien replied.
“Not really,” Auggie said. “But if you’re gonna be with Bruce, it’s gonna be a way of life, just like for the rest of our spouses.”
Bruce noted Beau’s furrowed brow and the stare that came along with it. He elbowed Beau.
When Auggie buried his face in the menu, Bruce mouthed, “Soon.”
Auggie looked around impatiently. “Where’s our waitress? I want my Ferdi Special.”
“What is a Ferdi Special?” Bastien asked.
“Only the best sandwich you’ll ever eat,” Auggie shared. “It’s a po’ boy packed with baked ham, roast beef, debris, and gravy, served dressed. Hell. My mouth waters just talking about it.”
“Debris?” Bastien asked.
“That’s the bits that fall off beef while it’s roasting or being carved,” Beau explained.
Bastien closed his menu. “Then I think I’ll have one of those as well.”
After everyone ordered their lunch, Auggie leaned back in his chair. “Okay. So here’s what we know so far.”
Bruce listened absentmindedly as Auggie recapped the case. He nodded occasionally, but his mind was elsewhere.
How am I gonna tell Auggie I’m leaving the force? He’s been an advocate for me, both with Beau and the force, since I joined them. Can I really do this?
He looked over at Bastien, who was sitting at ease with his arm draped across the back of Bruce’s chair and seemed to be listening intently and even enjoying the back and forth brainstorming.
Jesus, Bruce. Get over it. Of course you can do this. For him you can do anything.
By the time Auggie finished recapping, no new theories or ideas had come to light, which meant either they had covered every base, or they were all missing something.
“Ah, Auggie?” Bruce asked.
Auggie looked across the table. “Did I forget something?”
“No. You didn’t forget anything. I….” He looked at Bastien. “I mean, we have something to tell you.”
Auggie rolled his eyes. “Oh, please don’t tell me you’re getting married. I don’t want to picture either one of you in a big white dress and fluffy hat.”
Beau snorted his iced tea into his lap, and Tollison slapped him on the back, apparently trying to hold back his own laughter. Bastien, on the other hand, looked like he didn’t know whether Auggie was teasing or not.
“Fuck you, Auggie,” Bruce said as the waitress started bringing their food to the table.
Auggie started laughing. “I’m just teasing you, man,” he said. “You too, Bastien. If you guys are getting married, I’ll be right there cheering you on.”
Before Bruce knew it, everyone had their mouths full of food and the time no longer seemed appropriate.
When Auggie was through eating, he wiped his mouth and dropped his paper napkin in his empty plate.
